It seems only fitting that my first fashion post on the year anniversary of Club Forty revisits a trend that I began with… dungarees.
It was my dilemma about dungarees that inspired me to start blogging. For this reason, they will always have a special place in my wardrobe.
At the time, I loved the idea of dungarees but wasn’t convinced I could carry them off… I wondered, at my age, was I too old for them? And I thought… if I am thinking this, then surely other 40-something women must be thinking the same too…?
And that’s how Club Forty was conceived. A blog where I could have fun trying out new trends. Hopefully offering like-minded women ideas and inspiration on how to adopt and style the latest fashions and where to buy them.
A year on, the dungaree trend is certainly not dead! Dungarees have become a wardrobe staple – a functional, but directional item of clothing that serve you perfectly on running-around days, school pick ups, lunch dates and more.
I only have the one pair of dungas… Superdry Emmins, which I bought from Next. They have served me well. I’ve worn them lots over the past year, so the cost-per-wear is in good shape!!
Dungarees are so versatile. In Summer, wear them over your favourite breton or white tee, a vest top, a peasant top or a bardot neckline… or with a pussy bow blouse or a crisp white shirt. I have yet to ‘dress them up’ for a night out, but that may still come…
There are so many styles of dungarees around and they suit all shapes and sizes, so don’t shy away because you don’t feel you have the figure! The key is to try lots on. They are so easy to wear and can be sized up to look super cool and slouchy. If you are still debating, then waste no more time – invest in a pair.
The most important reflection I have made since writing the Dungaree Debate, is that you are never too old. If you want to try something new, then do it. Embrace new trends. Simply adapt them to your style. Your bestie will soon tell you if you are mutton dressed as…
I have become a lot bolder in my fashion choices since I began writing Club Forty. Clothes or outfits I lusted after, but shied away from previously, I now embrace. And why not? You only live once. And life, my lovelies, is most definitely a catwalk!
So how do you feel about dungarees nowadays… a year on since my first post? Has your opinion changed since then? I’d love to know what you think, so please do leave a comment below.
Thanks for reading, see you next time!

I need a pair that accommodate my thigh shape (large!). It’s funny with dilemmas isn’t it, once you bite the bullet and wear whatever it is, you don’t look back and you wonder why you ever deliberated over it.
Yes, I totally agree with that Jane – you wonder what on earth all the deliberation was about in the first place!!! With fashion trends, it sometimes takes a while for them to ‘settle in’ before they become acceptable to you. I was like that with culottes (this time around)!!!
I love dungarees but not sure if the will suit me!! I have ordered the gap ones at the bargain price of £15.50, due to an extra 25% discount on all sale items. Fingers crossed hopefully they might suit a tall 50yr old!!?
Wow what a bargain Isatu! Fingers crossed you like them… Dungarees would look fab on you… you just need to find the right ones! ☺
