I have been yearning for some dungarees since their comeback last summer. But I have been niggled by the concern that I’m too old for them… and that I’ll end up resembling Huckleberry Finn!!!
I didn’t own a pair in the nineties… I can’t remember why!?? Maybe that’s why I am lusting over them now!
I lean towards boyish shapes and relaxed clothes, so they appeal to my intrinsic style. I am addicted to jumpsuits, so perhaps the dungaree is the obvious next step for me in the ‘all-in-one’ trend?
I couldn’t resist ordering a range of styles from ASOS to try on at home… and I fell in love with these Superdry Skinny Leg Emmins Dungarees. With soft stretchy denim, they are incredibly comfy. So what if I look like a farmer – I’m a happy Huckleberry Finn!!
I predict I’ll be wearing these dungarees for most of the (British!) Summer and well into Autumn/Winter.
Day-to-day, they are perfect for throwing on over a T-shirt (either plain or Breton) and teaming with my Birkenstocks, Vans or Adidas Superstars. I also think they look pretty cool styled slightly smarter over a crisp white shirt with brogues… perhaps for a relaxed lunch date or day out. I may go one step further and wear with heels and a sleeveless top for a funky, evening look… (photo to follow, if I go there!)
I’d love to know your thoughts on the great Dungaree Debate – I imagine a bit like Marmite; you either love or hate them? If you are not a fan of the denim variety, then there other variations to try. Perhaps the pinafore jumpsuit is more your style or even dungaree shorts? Here are some others that I love…

I’m loving the blog. Particularly the fashion and fast days. The Dungarees debate made me laugh as I’d had the very same inner conflict! I did have them in the 90s and when they reappeared I was delighted. I bought a tailored pair from Zara a couple of years ago but never really wore them. I tried to persuade my 14 year old daughter to buy The Topshop pair last year but she wasn’t keen! This year she was trying on some stuff in Newlook and I spied a black pair. Again I tried to extol the virtues to her and she said that I should be quiet and try them on myself! The mutton conversation went through my head again. However, I thought ‘sod it, who cares!’ and bought them. Love em ?
Hi Louise, I’m glad you bought the dungarees… perhaps we should just go with our hearts and wear what we bloody well like, without these inner conflicts?!! Maybe we just need a good friend who will tell us once we step over the ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ line, although I’m sure our daughters will happily play that role!!
I’m so pleased you like the blog!

I love this dungarees blog, it’s brilliant!! I like this look but never thought I could carry it off! However looking through a magazine Claudia Winkleman seems to have the same opinion as me! So she has recommended a very cool dungaree pinafore dress (River Island), also available in black!!! So if you’re not into the dungarees try the pinafore dress version (or both)!!
Thanks Helen for the tip about the River Island pinafore dress! I think they are going to be very popular this winter…
