This time last year, I described the fashion landscape as being a tale of two halves; on the one side we were clutching on to our loungewear, and on the other, we were yearning to get dolled up again. The festive theme was gentle. But with lockdown almost a distant memory, this festive season is all high-impact glitz and glam!
Whilst the future isn’t necessarily bright (at least for the short-term) there’s a certain YOLO attitude in the air. And often in the face of austerity, the fashion world’s response is to bring out the showstoppers.
Metallics, sequins, luxe fabrics and feathers are abound and maximalist this festive season, so it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and make a statement! There’s no such thing as over-dressed during the party season.
But if all this feels too much, remember bling doesn’t necessarily equal gaudy. There’s a way to wear glitzy pieces so the look is paired back, cool and yet elevated. Claudia Winkleman’s faultless Strictly style is a case in point. Try pairing a statement, ‘blingy’ piece with something classic or low-key.
Also worth noting is the current, liberating ‘anything goes’ approach to fashion which means that anything you purchase this season need not be put away until next year. Sequins are acceptable all-year-round; gold and silver look stunning in the summer sunshine; and frivolous details like feathers and fringing are a welcome embellishment anytime!

Party Season
Invest in sparkly dresses now to shine at parties, but wear them beyond the festive season by adding a crisp white shirt (undone) and sandals for a relaxed summery look. Or throw on an oversized blazer and pair with box-fresh pumps for an on-trend city look.

The Big Day
Comfort is key on Christmas Day and velvet is the ultimate decadent, yet comfortable option. It always feels luxe and often has that all important bit of stretch!! Pair with a cosy knit to take you further into the Winter months ahead.

Party PJs
Luxe PJs reigned in lockdown when many parties were hosted over Zoom, but the trend has continued and not only are they the perfect solution if you favour a pyjama day over the festive season, but they can also be dressed up for a night out too!
