Tank tops, tunics and oversized, puritan collars aside, there really isn’t much new in terms of trends for AW20. Most of what we are seeing in the shops and online is an updated version of what was on trend last year… and subsequent years before that.
This is good news and timely as many of us are spending less due to the shaky economic climate we have all been hurled into. We have less social activities and events to attend, and we are finally being mindful about our consumption.
The AW fashion shows fell just before the majority of the world was plunged into lockdown. As a result, fashion houses were forced to curtail production and buyers became extremely cautious about which trends to pick up and run with for the AW season. Most of the more creative and outré designs have not been translated for the High St. and instead, the focus seems to be on wearable classics with a few punts on some frivolous styles.
With no hot new trends to buy into and very few social engagements to buy for, it’s a good opportunity to pause and take a good look at what we already have before deciding what pieces we really need to update our wardrobes for the coming season.
Less buying, more styling
We undoubtedly already own many pieces that align to the key AW20 trends; they just need to be tweaked and worn in a slightly different way. Pleather, statement sleeves, chunky boots, elevated lounge wear, voluminous dresses, 70s/80s/90s aesthetics, neutral colours, colour-blocking, oversized blazers, a belted silhouette, animal prints, plaid & dog tooth checks are all back and totally relevant this year.
Here’s 5 key trends I will be picking out from my wardrobe to style for the coming season… buying just a few key pieces to complete outfits:
Back to black
Did it ever really go away? Not really, but this year think ‘gothic victoriana’ and mix textures like lace, leather, burnt out fabric and tulle.
The 70s show
My favourite sartorial decade! I will be digging out my pussy bows, bohemian dresses, slouchy boots, fringing and flared jeans as I veer between try to emulate Stevie Nicks (see main pic) or a Charlie’s Angel!!
Chunky boots – with everything!
I am absolutely loving what my Dad used to call Bovver Boots and this year they have got even chunkier! Wear them with a feminine, pretty dress to totally toughen up the look.

Collegiate style
Tennis socks and trainers, plaid, knitwear, puffa jackets and luxe joggers are giving me all the freshman vibes and are ideal for working-from-home.
New neutrals
Despite being a lover of colour, I do like a neutral outfit on certain days. But I will try adding a pop or blue or lilac to bring this palette right up to date.
Lockdown showed us more than ever the mental impact of wearing something you feel great in – whether it be luxurious loungewear or a frivolous frock; the power of a fabulous outfit is undeniable. Whatever the next 6 months bring, I will still be dressing up – even with nowhere to go.
