As much as I love shopping, I don’t have the funds to constantly update my wardrobe with new outfits. It’s way too easy to purchase a new item of clothing when you are not sure what to wear, but it’s also fun and quite satisfying to resurrect pieces from the back of your wardrobe. Clothes that I love don’t get thrown out. More often than not, a classic style will come back into fashion or just needs to be re-styled to bring up-to-date.
Maxi skirts have always been a fixture in my wardrobe and I’ve been wearing them a lot this summer, as you might have noticed from my Instagram feed. Yes, I know that midi skirts are the current trend, but the maxi still has its place. For me, they are a godsend in summer as they not only keep me cool, but they cover up my legs. I do not like bearing my vein-y limbs – I am plagued with not only thread veins across my thighs but varicose veins on the back of my calves too. Double whammy! So I prefer to hide them away, in public at least.
So back to the skirts… Yes the maxi has moved on from the boho look that Sienna Miller epitomised in the mid-noughties. Now the maxi shape is more structured and flattering with a cinched-in, high waist. Alternatively, the maxi can be ‘toughened’ up with trainers and a bomber or biker jacket for street-style casualness. I love and have adopted both looks over the summer.
But I don’t want my maxi skirt to be a summer-only affair. By ditching the vest top or Tee, and pairing instead with a shirt, I intend to get more wear out of my beloved maxis and take the look well into Autumn. All the items I’m wearing in the images below are vintage Club Forty purchases! So this style update has had zero impact on my bank balance… hurrah!
A jersey maxi works well with a denim shirt and trainers. This maxi is from Gap a couple of years ago . It can be worn as tube dress or skirt, hence the rolled-down waist.
A white shirt will pretty much go with any maxi. I bought this wrap-around skirt in my first year of Uni to wear to a 70s party. I adore it and have resurrected it many times.
A black shirt for a smarter look, which could easily work in the office. This Top Shop skirt is my most recent maxi, purchased last summer. The cut is more current, with a shorter hem at the front, longer at the back (perfect for covering those veins!!)
