You know I love an exposed shoulder… I have written a post on one-shoulder style before – relating to the festive party season. But it’s also a fantastic shape to wear in the summer heat when no jacket is required and shoulders are nicely bronzed.
I have been a long-time fan of the asymmetric, one-shoulder look. On one hand, what appeals to me is the simplicity and clean line that a one-shoulder piece provides. But I also like the summery señorita-ish appeal of ruffles and an exposed shoulder!
I know this style doesn’t appeal to everyone. But it’s certainly not one that you should avoid for fear of it being too young!!! A one-shoulder piece is sophisticated and elegant and is certainly appropriate for 40 plus ladies… as always the key is in the styling.
Larger busted ladies will find it tricky with the plain one-shoulder tops but, as long as they have a supportive strapless bra, they may feel more comfortable in an asymmetric top with ruffles.
Plus, you’ll need to feel confident about your arms. I wholeheartedly recommend yoga – my arms are in much better shape since I began practicing yoga regularly. Or simple planks, press ups and chair lifts are fab for the arms and they aren’t really as hard as you might think… and with practice you gradually build strength and muscle tone.
A one-shoulder top, dress or jumpsuit is quite edgy but at the same time also quite classic – if that can be possible!!? For example, this Ted Baker white ruffle top, reduced to £44, looks just stunning styled here with black trousers.
Another classic winner is this one-shoulder Warehouse dress, reduced to a great price too – £35. It could also be worn around Christmas time, so a fantastic investment! Just add pops of colour with bright accessories…
This cute tropical print top from H&M, just £3.99, would go with all manner of items in your wardrobe from jeans, to wide-leg white trousers, navy paperbag waist trousers, a plain midi or denim skirt. (Also available in black and red.)
Another ideal summer wardrobe investment would be this one-shoulder jumpsuit from H&M. At £39.99 it is a fab holiday item that can be worn year-on-year with slides or flip flops. I would equally dress it up with heels and a clutch for a party.
And just look at this fun one-shoulder jumpsuit from New Look, reduced to £18! Another fab holiday item…
Perfect in this sunshine, I love this yellow ruffle one-shoulder top from Very, £20. Dress this up or down – in the evening with wide leg black trousers (as styled by Ted Baker above) or wear in the day with shorts, jeans, culottes or a skirt.
This Issa toucan print one-shoulder top, in the sale at House of Fraser, £34, is another great summer top that will blend nicely with lots of options in your wardrobe. Wear with denim, black, red or white and dress up or down as you please!
If you have a garden party, day at the races or other summer event to attend then this ruffle dress from Adrianna Papell via Next, £135, would look fantastic! Add red shoes and accessories for extra va-va-voom!
Or if you still haven’t chosen an outfit for a summer wedding or formal evening event, then what about this one-shoulder dress from ASOS, reduced to £35. The colour is stunning and it will be sure to stand out from the crowd.
I picked up this one-shoulder top from a local dress agency recently and wore it to the races… You don’t always have to buy things new… I am a great advocate of preloved clothing!

You look stunning and hotter than all the models here. Adore your heart shaped shades too. I love a cheeky little one shoulder, thanks for the reminder x
