Chokers aren’t the only 90s trend making a comeback. One of the key trends for Winter 2016 is velvet. Historically associated with royalty, velvet provides an elegant, luxe look which is perfect for the festive party season.
Whether velvet or velour (I am not really sure of the difference???) the thick material not only provides extra warmth on wintry nights, but also smooths and hides lumps and bumps. What’s not to love?
In my fashion dreams I would channel Gucci and wear, not red, but an emerald green velvet tux suit to the upcoming Christmas parties…
I was tempted to order the blue velvet suit below in the La Redoute Black Friday deal… but annoyingly the coordinating trouser and jacket only come in navy. I bought my hubby, aka Mr Club Forty, a navy velvet blazer for Christmas last year so we would risk looking like Posh n Becks in their coordinating days!! I am, however, eagerly awaiting delivery of the green, velvet blazer I picked out in my La Redoute post. So watch this space!
On a recent visit to Broadstairs, I purchased a pair of wide-legged, black velvet trousers from a boutique. What’s great about these is that they have an elasticated waist!!! At least I’ll be comfortable on Christmas Day!
Wide-legged trousers elongate and look great on most frames, just a pair of heels is required to lift the silhouette. There are many similar options around.
I also like the velvet, cold-shoulder top below, which I ordered as part of my recent Dorothy Perkins haul. At only £18, I thought it would make a useful wardrobe addition as I would wear it with jeans for a relaxed night out… But Mr Club Forty has confessed that he isn’t a fan of the whole “cut-out shoulder look” (how dare he!!!) So it might get sent back…
As always, I’d love to know your thoughts… Is velvet for you? Do you already own a lovely velvet item you’ll be resurrecting for the party season? Or are you intending to purchase something new?

Love velvet!!!! Love that top with the shoulders cut out!! I have ordered a velvet top and dress for Christmas this year!!! Hope they fit when they arrive ?
Looking forward to seeing your velvet purchases Helen!
I love the feel of velvet and think it looks great on others, however I am not a fan of it on me. I think you need to be a skinny minnie to pull off velvet.
I love that top on you – what does Mr C40 know!!!!!!
Ahh Sam, I have to disagree! I have seen the Next velvet jumpsuit on a curvaceous lady and it looked utterly gorgeous! Nigella Lawson also springs to mind in her trademark black velvet dresses. .. and didn’t all the voluptuous 50s icons wear a lot of velvet???
Yes I kind of agree about velvet adding an inch or so that I can ill afford on my thighs but love that cold shoulder top!
PS Simon in those red velvet high waisters ?
