OMG I love a one-shoulder. I am so happy it’s back on-trend (yes, I know… simple things!!) Whether it be a top, dress, or jumpsuit.. there’s something about this look that, to me, screams PAAARTAY!
This is the outfit to be saved for the ‘out out’ occasion; where disco lights, champagne, late cabs and hangovers are the norm.
The one-shoulder exposé has been around for centuries, from the Greek goddesses to 50s debutantes. But I most associate this look with the hedonistic, late 70s, party crowd. Images of Bianca Jagger sashaying into Studio 54 spring to mind… I would so love to have been a part of that era!
I have been a long-time fan of the asymmetric, one-shoulder look. I haven’t purchased anything new this season as I have several, beloved items of old, languishing in the depths of my wardrobe. All are black which, in my opinion, is the best colour for this look as the silhouette is a statement in itself, no further distraction required.
There’s the J.Crew dress I wore on my hen night (very similar to the Next dress I have selected further down), which, (thanks to 5.2 and yoga) made a reappearance in Brighton earlier this year; an 80s style, one-shoulder jumpsuit purchased a few years ago from Reiss which may come out to play this New Year’s Eve; and the simple AllSaints, knitted dress in the picture below.
What appeals to me is the simplicity and the clean line that a one-shoulder piece provides. I would personally avoid accessories that detract from the asymmetrical shape and the exposed collarbone. So no necklaces, just statement ear-rings.
If you find the look a bit too full-on or simply don’t have the occasion to wear it, then perhaps consider purchasing a top to wear with your favourite jeans. It’s a great look for a dinner or drinks party.
For a more formal, perhaps corporate occasion, a simple, one-shoulder top looks classy and classic tucked into a pleated or prom skirt, or with wide-legged trousers.
The one-shoulder jumpsuit has got to be my all-time favourite party look, it just oozes laid-back-glamour appeal!
Admittedly, the one-shoulder look isn’t going to appeal to everyone. You’ll need to feel confident about your arms (or at least one of them, if you’re going for full sleeve!!) I wholeheartedly recommend yoga for arm toning (I’ll be writing more in the New Year about my love of yoga.) Mr Club Forty, on the other hand, swears by arm dips to tackle any bingo wings☺
So what are your thoughts? Do you share my love for the one-shoulder? As always, I’d love to hear from you..
Thanks for reading!

I used to love a one shoulder exposé. Someone made a comment a few years ago about age and exposing upper arms ( not directly aimed at me) and whilst it didn’t put me off it made me question the one shoulder. I love the style on you. I also love the black jumpsuit ( what’s not to like?!). I haven’t done enough yoga this year in time for party season and think toning my arms with arm dips in time for the weekend may be a little ambitious ;-)))
Hi Louise! How annoying that the comment put you off… I can’t abide people who say you shouldn’t wear or do something after a certain age… You should wear and do whatever makes you feel good – at any age, and toned arms or not!!! XXX
Love the look!! Love the black dress! Had a karen millen skinny knitted top with an embellished shoulder strap that i loved!! Can’t find it now though!
You can wear absolutely ANYTHING and it looks great! Love the H&M jumpsuit too. Fab and I’m sure there’s a one shoulder dress on my wardrobe floor somewhere….
Hi Jane, thank you so much for the compliment♥ But it’s certainly not true! Who needs a one-shoulder dress when you have an amazing electric-blue jumpsuit to party in!!!
Just purchased a one shoulder black dress for the party season. Not quite Madonna arms anymore, however will be wearing this! Embracing my 40’s – just a number! X
Hi Maree, I totally agree – 40 is just a number! Have a great night in your one-shoulder dress ♥
