I have just started watching Sex in the City from season 1. It’s the sort of programme I can have on in the background whilst doing other bits as I am only really interested in the clothes and in particular what Carrie wears! It’s actually been 20 years since she first wore that pink tulle skirt in the opening sequence, but even so modern-day tulle is still synonymous with SATC. If you remember, Carrie also closed the final series in a demure pistachio-green tulle skirt – totally reminiscent of the ones around right now.
Have you ever put on a tulle skirt or dress? If not, then I urge you to! I guarantee you will feel not only super feminine, but you’ll have to try hard to resist the urge to twist and sashay so that the fabric swishes around you. Such is the effect of tulle; you can understand why it is so loved by toddlers and young girls. Such feel-good factor should be accessible to any age – you are never to old for tulle! Did you see Rachel Weiz in frothy Gucci tulle at the Baftas? Or Helen Mirren (73 years old) in demure pink tulle at the Oscars on Sunday? Helen herself could not stop swishing that fabulous tulle frock on the red carpet
I bought the blue tulle skirt I am wearing above from ASOS a couple of years ago… I’ve worn it many times and it will remain a permanent fixture in my wardrobe. It makes me happy, so Marie Kondo would approve!
Tulle can be as cool as it is pretty. The key is not to dress like you are going to the prom. The attitude should be less fairy-tale princess, more self-assured woman. Like sequin skirts, don’t be afraid to wear a tulle skirt by day. Just add a leather biker / camo print / battered denim jacket to achieve that high-low look. Even though tulle was a key feature in many of this year’s collections – check out Viktor & Rolf SS19 ‘Fashion Statement’ collection (main image), and more recently Dior’s 2019 Cruise Collection (images above); the High St. has been slow to pick up on the tulle trend… but it will come! Thankfully, many smaller boutiques both local and online, have been savvy and jumped on the trend. My local favourite, Kitty Rose, consistently sells-out of their black and leopard tulle skirts (below) and has just restocked (and they offer free postage!)
