At this time of year, when the party dresses are in full swing, a trouser suit makes a refreshing change.
I adore the strong, confident, slightly louche appearance of a woman in a masculine outfit.
But a trouser suit doesn’t have to be totally mannish. Little touches of feminitiy can and should be added. A frilly blouse, bright lipstick, statement earrings and/or strappy sandals will compliment and add sass to a trouser suit.
Claudia Winkleman, Carine Roitfeld and Emanuelle Alt, are style idols (of mine) that immediately spring to mind in this look. These are self-assured, intelligent women who always dress on-point, never look overtly sexy but yet exude sexiness. How do they do that?
A velvet suit is totally hot right now. Checking back through my post on velvet partwear this time last year, I was drooling over a velvet Gucci trouser suit – and I still am! This year velvet has gained widespread popularity and is THE fabric to be wearing for the festive season. Boden, Top Shop, Monsoon and Zara are all offering stunning velvet 2-piece suits in gorgeous colours – and selling out fast!
If velvet isn’t your thing, then what about a sequin suit? Not as risqué as it sounds, as sequins have well and truly worked their way into the everyday. Just tone down the accessories and hair to keep the look effortlessly cool.
Or why not invest in a classic tuxedo suit? You’ll get so much wear from it and it really won’t date.
The styling is all wrong with this M&S suit – yes it looks ok for the boardroom, but remove the white shirt and replace with a sequin cami top, hair loosly tied-up and you’ll totally change this look for a sparkly night out.
In sharp contrast, Emma Willis (LOVE her) looks insanely cool in this tuexdo suit and sheer black blouse by Next. See more from the Emma Willis colaboration with Next here.
For those who are brave & bold – a red trouser suit would totally turn heads this party season!
A suits is a great investment as the jacket and trousers can be worn separately and dressed up or down to suit any occasion.
If you are not keen on a full suit, then simply wear a velvet, sequin or tuxedo blazer with a pair of tailored trousers or coated skinnies and add heels! It’s the perfect, laid back, sassy look this party season!
Accessorise your festive trouser suit or blazer and trews combo with strappy sandals and a glitzy evening bag and you’re ready to saunter in to that party with a swing in your hips and twinkle in your eye!!!

Since this is the second year I’ve lusted over a velvet suit, I am putting it firmly at the top of my Christmas wishlist, so watch this space and keep an eye on my Instagram feed as hopefully I’ll be modelling one soon…
What’s on your Christmas list and what are you planning to wear this party season?
As always, I’d love to hear from you!
