Trainers have slowly and surely slipped into everyday-wear for even the most classic and conservative dresser. The revival of the spots-luxe trend has deemed trainers acceptable footwear for all but the most corporate or formal occasions. And I, for one, thank the fashion lords! I am most at home in casual attire and trainers are my preferred choice of footwear when the weather cools.
I think my love of trainers as a fashion item (not just for the purpose of sporting activity) blossomed in the 90s. Then, Stan Smiths and Adidas Gazelles were the uniform of the Brit-pop crowd, whilst the clubbers wore Nike Air or New Balance. My nights out in the early days of Shoreditch (which inevitably ended-up dancing on tables!) were wearing Puma or New Balance trainers. And I remember being deeply irritated that my place of work at that time, only allowed trainers on dress-down Friday.
Fast forward 20-odd years and an outfit paired with trainers is not only a sensible solution but scores high in the style stakes too. Comfort and style – what’s not to love?
No longer restricted to jeans or joggers, a pair of trainers goes with everything. I cannot think of a single item in my wardrobe that would look odd if I paired it with trainers. Cropped trousers, wide-leg trousers, maxi or midi skirts, dresses, jumpsuits all – they all work. Obviously it needs to be the right pair of trainers. If you are wearing trainers to work in corporate land, then they no doubt need to be fairly classic, smart and as box-fresh as possible!!
Versatility is key in my wardrobe so I love the way a trainer dresses-down an outfit. Whenever I buy a new dress these days, my immediate question to self is, ‘will it go with my trainers?’ I am always looking for that dress-down / high-low alternative option.
Chunky, so-called ‘ugly’ trainers have dominated the past couple of seasons as well as neon colours… but I haven’t been a fan. I love a classic trainer. White, lace-up trainers in an iconic shape are always a winner but I am not adverse to a snazzy colour-way either. Mr Club Forty is very adventurous when it come to trainers and it sometimes rubs off a little on me!!
The AW19 trends are eclectic. There are no rules. The high street stores, as well as the high-end designers, have all produced their own trainer styles and many new brands have gained in popularity with Veja, Air&Grace and Golden Goose emerging as leaders. From high-tops to high-tec, iconic shapes and embellishments to simple plimsoll styles; there are so many to choose from! So pick a style that speaks to you – whether it be about nostalgia, pure joy or simple comfort. The choice is yours and your over-worked, 40-something feet will rejoice!
