Layering is nothing new. It’s a sensible way to dress during the colder months. Multiple layers provide a more effective and controllable way to insulate the body, rather than one heavy layer.
This Winter, I am enjoying prolonging the life of blouses, shirts and dresses by adding an extra layer underneath in the form of a polo neck (or roll neck).
A good quality polo neck is a wardrobe essential. It’s not only versatile but practical too, and doesn’t compromise on style.
By layering, you open up new combinations for existing clothes in your wardrobe. Patterns, textures and colours can be combined together to provide a new lease of life to past-season favourites.
Paired with a flimsy blouse or dress, a polo neck adds essential, bone-warming cosiness. Under a chunkier knit, we are talking super insulation and the opportunity to add extra colour.
I also like the way that the addition of a polo neck dresses-down clothes normally reserved for after-dark. Wear a polo neck under your favourite evening jumpsuit, dress or cami top for a more casual look.
You might have guessed, I am particularly fond of dressing-down sequins in this way! Mainly because I no longer have the social calendar I used to, so they would otherwise never get worn!!
So where to buy? Most high st stores stock polo necks, but I always head to M&S for quality and to H&M for affordability.
The striped version I am wearing in the pic above came from H&M and cost a mere £8.99 – a super economic way to update your wardrobe, and this particular one looks great under a denim shirt, or a jumper (or both!)
So before you look in your wardrobe and lament that you have nothing to wear as the temperature cools, could the addition of a simple polo neck and a few extra, stylish layers provide the solution?
As always, I’d love to know your thoughts. Please leave a comment below.
Until next time, thanks for reading!

Love that Hobbs polo.
I layer up with M&S thermal tops and never seem to feel the cold. Normally by now I would be wearing my M&S black roll necks which I notice were manufactured in 09/09. No one knew until now I have been wearing the same three for 8 years.
After our chat the other day, I went out and bought 3 polo neck tops. I have started wearing them and they have helped keep me warm, whilst still looking nice. Thanks Claire, I am loving the layering idea x
