It started with classic Breton stripes, then came so-called ‘banker’ stripes and now it’s bold-as-you-like stripes!!
In Summer, stripes were subtle, nautical and candy-coloured… but for AW17 they are moving to another eye-catching level. Wide monochrome stripes, berry and navy-blue stripes, retro stripes, stripes-on-stripes, and stripe clashes are super on-trend right now.
I’m wearing head-to-toe Zara in these photos – all current season, except the mules. I love the 80s feel to this blouse (it even has shoulder pads!!) Wearing stripes on stripes makes quite a statement, but I like it and I think it works… although my daughter was horrified by this outfit!!
Don’t be afraid of bold stripes.
If you don’t like the double-stripe look, then simply make your striped item the statement piece and pair with a simple block colour. This can be an elegant and classic look, or you can make it more edgy, depending on the piece and how you style it.
Vertical stripes elongate and slim the frame, so look great on long-line flared trousers or cigarette-style pants. Whilst prom-style skirts work really well in a bold, horizontal stripe.
This amazing Top Shop wrap dress has been a real hit on Instagram… it is rather short, but I would wear it with black opaques for a smart evening outfit. I also think it would serve really well as a tunic over a pair of wide-legged, black trousers.
I also love this striped suit from River Island. It could be mixed and matched with many wardrobe staples! Just imagine the blazer with jeans…
And these striped trousers from Banana Republic are exceptionally cool and a brilliant sale price at £19.99. I had a similar pair from Kookai when I was at Uni (remember that brand???) These would look sassy teamed with a black tux jacket & heels. But also would serve well for off-key days with white trainers and your favourite sweatshirt.
