Go-faster stripes have been back on the scene for a couple of years now, ever since the sport-luxe trend took off. They first appeared on joggers, bringing them out of the hygge zone and making them grown-up and glam enough to wear day-to-day, in the office, or even with heels on a night out! But they seem to be reaching an unprecedented height right now as the AW ranges start dropping into stores.
No longer reserved for joggers… now classic ’slacks’, tops and skirts – you name it – are adorned with a sporty stripe or two. like the Cigarette Trousers in the main image from Misguided via ASOS.
H&M have even combined the trend with the other hot trend of the moment – leopard!
As with any trend, there’s the risk of saturation. So watch out for go-faster stripes added to mass-produced pieces just ‘because’. Pick carefully designed items that don’t look tacky… let the stripe(s) add ‘something’. The recent M&S hits are a great example of this… without the go-faster stripe in bold orange/red, the ubiquitous leopard dress and subsequent navy & polka dot version would not have been so appealing.
To update an outfit with a racer stripe, consider purchasing a belt, like this one from Boden. It will instantly add a sport-luxe feel to any dress or top & skirt outfit. Don’t worry about clashing, there literally is no clashing these days!! Wear with leopard, florals or geometric patterns.
