I was a lucky girl last week as I got invited to try a new, pop-up restaurant in Chelmsford. Those of you who follow me on Instagram will know that this sent me into an excited panic about what to expect – and subsequently what to wear – as I hadn’t attended a press event before… as a blogger!!!
The evening was a lovely, intimate affair – just 20 or so people; bloggers and local press – upstairs at the Riverside Inn in Chelmsford. The pop-up restaurant is run by Andi Walker, a Masterchef The Professionals finalist in 2015 and now executive chef of the Blue Group.
Andi delivers a fine-dining, taster menu on Thursday to Saturday each week. The menu, consisting of 6 courses, changes weekly and combines locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
This is what Andi treated us to…
- Amuse bouche
Shamefully, I was too greedy to really take-in what all these little delicacies were!!! There was an onion bhaji and some pork crackling, but the third item escapes me! But take my word, they were all delicious!
- Sourdough with Marmite butter
Prior to this evening, I had only eaten Marmite when I was pregnant with my daughter. It was a craving that I haven’t revisited until now… but the whipped Marmite-infused butter that Andi served with bread was a-maaazing!
- Salt-baked celeriac with apple, mustard and picked onionsThis was one of my favourite dishes! I loved the zingy tang of the celeriac and creamy mustard. A perfect dish to awaken the tastebuds!
- Free-range chicken breast and kiev, with mushroom puree & baby gem lettuceThe simple flavour combinations in this dish were totally scrumptious with the velvety mushroom puree tasting like heaven.
- Chocolate torte with peanut butter ice-cream, caramel and peanutsEven though I was almost full to capacity, this last course was the icing on the cake. The peanut butter ice-cream was the bomb! The chocolate torte, as you would expect, was intensely rich – but so devourable.
Andi served each course at our table and described how the food was sourced (using local ingredients). He is obviously very passionate about what he does and at the end of the evening he was keen to directly hear our thoughts and know what we like best about each dish.
If you live in the area, I would definitely recommend a visit to Andi Walker’s pop-up restaurant. The taster menu is incredible value at just £39 per person for 6 courses. (Please note, there is usually a fish course added to the above line-up.)
Check out the Riverside Inn website for booking information. Don’t leave it too long though, as Andi is only there for a limited time!
And if you were wondering what I did decide to wear to the event…
