If you ask me what is my one winter wardrobe essential… the answer would have to be a roll neck. Not only does this simple item add a much needed layer of warmth, it also provides outfit options for clothes you might not necessarily wear on cold, wintry days.
When it’s chilly, I pop a roll neck under a jumper, blouse, dress or jumpsuit – anything really! The great thing is, that clothes you might normally put away until it gets a bit warmer can be worn on even the coldest days.
At this time of year, when our bank balances are in recovery from the Christmas spend, it’s good to get creative with our exisiting wardrobe. The options for transforming an outfit with the addition of a roll neck are endless…
By layering a roll neck under your favourite floral, midi dress and adding some long boots and a faux fur gillet, you will totally nail a 70s, boho look. Alternatively, give a nod to the grungy 90s and wear with biker boots and a long cardigan.
Did you buy-in to the lace trend last year? Maybe you have a lace top or dress you wore over the festive period? Just pop a roll neck underneath to dress-it-down and wear to work.
What about jumpsuits? I am sure you have one in your wardrobe that would look great with a roll neck underneath… add a pair of white trainers, and it becomes a great day piece rather than just keeping for nights out.
Obviously it’s down to personal preference whether you chose a roll neck in a jersey or viscose fabric, or a fine merino or cashmere knit. Look for good quality with a comfortable, but tight fit around the neckline. My successful purchases have been from La Redoute and Marks & Spencer. I’m told Uniqlo is great for inexpensive roll necks – including cashmere. But my best buy has to be a viscose black roll neck I got – pre-kids – from Calvin Klein. In those days it was an expensive purchase, but I still wear it and so it was a worthy investment!
Just a final word on the name… it’s roll-neck right? Not a turtle neck – as the Americans call it, or polo neck – that’s a collar with buttons!!?? The online retailers seems to use all of the above to describe this item of clothing – very confusing!!
Whatever you call it, is a roll neck one of your winter wardrobe essentials too? Or do you have another wardrobe item that you can’t do without during the winter months? I’d love to know!
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this post and I hope I’ve provided a little inspo in terms of winter layering and pairing ideas with a roll neck.
